From Staff Nurse to Assistant Director of Nursing
Susan Fitzpatrick, the newly promoted Assistant Director of Nursing takes some time to answer a Q&A.
I have been at LIJ in the OR for 28 years.
Why did you choose a career at North Shore-LIJ?
I did my last semester at Adelphi in the OR at LIJ. After I graduated, I was offered a job here and decided to take it. I work with a great group of people who are like family.
Why did you choose a career in nursing?
Honestly, my mother always told me I would make a great nurse which is pretty much why I am in Nursing. I would love to tell you a more glamorous story about how I saved someone who was bleeding to death and had a calling but simply, my mother pushed me. it has worked out fabulously. In truth — mothers know best.
What advice would you give to nurses considering North Shore-LIJ?
Any nurse who is looking for a great place to work should consider North Shore-LIJ. There are plenty of opportunities to advance your career while working with great staff in a positive environment. I have worked as a staff nurse, 12 years later was promoted to Nurse Manager and I’m now Assistant Director of Nursing.
What is the best part of your day?
The best part of the day is at the end of work when I can look back and see a job well done.
What do you do in your free time?
In my spare time, I work at my husband’s ice cream store, The Hollow Creamery. That doesn’t leave me a lot of time for TV, books or movies but on occasion when I do have some down time, I will watch some PBS mysteries.
